Types of Nouns
There are several types of nouns in English. Nouns can be grouped in different categories as follows:
common nouns and proper nouns, concrete nouns and abstract nouns, countable and uncountable, collective nouns, compound nouns, etc.
1.Common Nouns
- The vast majority of nouns are common nouns.
- We call them common nouns because they do NOT name some specific person, place, thing, or idea.
- A common noun names any person, place, thing, substance, quality, or an idea.
- Words like a car, horse, teacher, table, house, happiness, movie, man, plane, city,ball—they are all “general” nouns.
2.Proper Nouns
- A proper noun is a name that identifies a particular person, place, thing, or idea. e.g. Bob, Africa, New York, Monday.
- Your name is a “proper noun”.
- Proper nouns are always capitalized in the English Language.
